![]() The increasing closeness of crowds in pits or standing-room only concerts has been seen as part of music culture, but the lack of care that Americans have for others means that people are more likely to look the other way when things go wrong. Although I haven’t participated in moshing because I refuse to put my Black life in the hands of white people, I understand that it is important to know the culture of the action before doing these potentially dangerous acts. In terms of the Astroworld tragedy, moshing has recently been branching out to all genres of music and to people who do not have any prior knowledge of the culture. ![]() They left those women there to be traumatized because the women thought they would be further harassed for speaking out. Where was the sense of belonging and trust here? All of the people who were supposed to be part of the culture were not there for those women. The pits during that hellscape including several instances of sexual assault and 2 instances of alleged rape. One of the final straws of the ‘90s era of mosh pits was the infamous Woodstock ‘99 weekend concert. The overall rock and metal scenes were increasingly anti-woman to the point where women no longer felt safe. The acts would try to enforce limits on the crowd, but in the end they sometimes lost control of the crowd, and it resulted in injuries and deaths. Mosh pits started losing respect in music culture around the ‘90s and were banned by musical performers like The Smashing Pumpkins. However, too often the mosh pit attitudes are “Whoa, don’t ruin the vibes,” because “This is what we all came for.” In these pit situations, moshers have to put full faith in the people around them to help when things get out of hand. In our capitalistic society, caring about others and their safety is only important when there is money to be made from it. It was a good idea when the pits were first formed, but the individualistic culture of the United States doesn’t allow people to care about others. Quite honestly, regardless of the culture around mosh pits, I don’t think that it should be up to random self-appointed concert-goers to make sure people are safe. It was up to them to stop the constant motion and prevent injuries. These concert-goers were on the edge of these mosh pits and made sure that moshers weren’t throwing punches or trampling people. However dangerous these actions may seem, there were unspoken rules that were often up to concert audiences to enforce. They developed new dance moves and actions like the wall of death and slam dancing. They enjoyed jumping around and recklessly dancing with others to release pent-up aggression. In the mosh pits of the ‘80s, people of all genders would pack themselves in front of the concert stage. Moshing was yet another way to rebel against the mainstream music of the day (usually in response to disco, which is a longer conversation ). The term first came up in the 1980s within the metal and punk alternative scene in Southern California. With the growth of moshing at concerts, regardless of the genre, I want to look at the history of mosh pits, the culture and the consequences.Īccording to Merriam-Webster, to “mosh” is to freely participate in wild activities - such as running into people on purpose - at a rock concert. "Take notes Travis Scott," wrote one person. In the aftermath of the Astroworld tragedy this past weekend, there have been several questions about mosh pits and the idea of “raging” at a concert in general. The comments section lauded A$AP for intervening to help fans in distress. "Back up! Back the fuck up!" he shouts and resumes the show only after ensuring his fans were okay. "Pick those girls up, bro! Pick the girls up! Pick the f*cking girls up, what's wrong with y'all?" he then calls on others to make room. "Everybody, back up! Look! Watch out!" he shouts, pointing to those in distress. ![]() He demands the music be stopped before calling on those around the fans to help the ones in distress while asking others to give them space. He said in an Instagram video, "Anytime I could make out, you know, anything that’s going on, you know, I stop the show and, you know, help them get the help they need.” A video on TikTok shows A$AP Rocky performing at the 2019 Rolling Loud music festival in California.

![]() But it didn't provide readers with the questions that the poll's subjects were asked, nor did it offer any context explaining why respondents answered the way they did. The PR piece stated that a phone survey of 737 American beer drinkers had determined that "38% of Americans would not buy Corona under any circumstances now," and by offering that statistic in conjunction with other information about the coronavirus, the piece again misleadingly suggested that consumers were being frightened away from Corona beer merely because of its name. However, that poll was conducted and published by the 5W public relations firm, and it did not find what many news reports gleefully claimed it did. Many of them based their articles on a survey that supposedly documented that "38% of Beer-Drinking Americans Wouldn't Buy Corona Now," again suggesting people were being scared off the brand due to mistaken associations between the name of the brand and a virus. Additionally, demand during the Chinese New Year was lower than in previous years as it coincided with the beginning of this outbreak."īut the trope that "people are so dumb they're shunning Corona beer because they think it's connected to the coronavirus" was too tempting for many news outlets to eschew, even though little or no evidence backed it up. "The outbreak has led to a significant decline in demand in China in both on-premise and in-home channels. The Belgium-based group said: "The impact of the Covid-19 virus outbreak on our business continues to evolve. The world’s biggest brewing giant, which is behind the Corona, Budweiser and Stella Artois brands, forecast first quarter earnings will tumble by about 10% after the virus outbreak saw demand slump in China as it also coincided with the Chinese New Year, sending its shares 8% lower.ĪB InBev estimates the earnings hit across China after seeing around £221 million of lost sales in the first two months of 2020 alone due to coronavirus – also known as Covid-19. However, what the text of the article actually reported was not that consumers had suddenly become "afraid" of Corona beer, but that multiple brands of beer (not just Corona) were experiencing relative sales slumps in China because the spread of the coronavirus had generally dampened public activities there, at a time of year (i.e., during Chinese New Year celebrations) when sales were typically high: Take, for example, the following article, whose headline and subhead misleadingly implied that the Corona brand had experienced a steep drop-off in sales because potential buyers were being scared off by its putative link to the coronavirus: In February 2020, as fears of a world-wide COVID-19 pandemic caused by a new coronavirus from China spread across the globe, many Western news outlets began running stories suggesting that consumers were shunning the popular Mexican brand of beer called Corona due to their mistakenly connecting it with the coronavirus. By early 2020, Brooke had reached out to her former School of Rock classmate, New York-based bassist, Ashley Suppa - and then there were three. The two aspiring musicians soon stirred an online sensation when they posted a YouTube video of their chilling recreation of the 1977 Heart classic, “Barracuda.” The clip now has been viewed nearly two million times.ĭriven with a vision, Brooke and Moriah now were on a mission to assemble their own band, one possessing the balls to be bold, and the courage to embrace a tasty melody. Then, Brooke’s story really ramped up when she was introduced to fellow New Yorker, singer/songwriter and guitarist, Moriah Formica, shortly after Moriah’s magnificent appearance on the wildly popular TV talent show, The Voice in 2019. ![]() Her personal YouTube channel is approaching an amazing 300,000 subscribers, and she gives her dad total props for assisting with her super-savvy social media marketing while she was in school. However, one of her earliest video covers, Tool’s “46 & 2,” now has received an astonishing 14 million-plus views. “It took about a year to get traction on YouTube,” Brooke admitted. Around the same time, she also started posting clips online of herself playing along to iconic tracks from an array of legendary bands. “Tool is SO amazing live!” Artwork for “Hate” by PlushĪs a result of being enrolled at the famed School of Rock, Brooke dove into formal drum lessons and had begun jamming with other local musicians by age 14. Do you really have to ask who won that coin toss? “It was my favourite, most inspirational concert,” Brooke said of the experience. She had to choose between going on an educational school field trip to Washington DC or stay at home and attend a Tool / Godsmack concert. The next Christmas, at age seven, Brooke graduated to her first proper “big girl” kit - a shiny new set of sparkly purple Ludwigs - 20” kick, TWO rack toms and REAL cymbals! In short order, the “genie” was “out of the bottle,” and that seductive siren was NOT going back in. ![]() Mommy! Mommy! Look what Santa brought me! In any case, make sure that you don't lose your LOS due to the sudden reappearance of a previously dissolved rock, and make sure that you're standing on one of the permanent rocks - if the one you're on suddenly develops a red, spider-web crack pattern on top, get off 'cuz it's about to go.Ībilities: both Gem Beasts are immune to CC, do not melee, and have the same two spell abilities, which can be difficult to tell apart because they have the same animation and look like fireball spells when cast. On the other hand, however, taming a mob at the southern spawn may require some jumps to get to either a floating rock or a nearby ledge within 30 yards and with good line-of-sight, depending upon which of the 2-3 possible rocks the mob has spawned on. Links to the mob's Wowhead maps are included below:įor taming purposes, your 30 yd range Tame Beast spell can reach a mob at the northern spawn location while standing on the pointy tip of a protruding piece of the ledge that wraps around Flreplume Peak, so no Super Mario rock jumping skill is required for the tame. These mobs do not path, but just sit on their floating rock, glaring defiantly at any hunters nearby. Both mobs have been seen to spawn at each of the two possible locations. ![]() Six of our observed spawns took place at the northern spawn point, and five at the southern spawn point, so again, I suspect that the chance is a 50% coin-toss for either location. Note that while the floating rock used for the 'northern' spawn point does not change, the exact floating rock used for the 'southern' spawn point is variable, with at least two spots confirmed and one more suspected (each located in and around the 'stairs'). Spawn Locations: One of two locations is possible with each spawn, a 'northern' floating rock almost directly east of the little graveyard on Fireplume Peak, and a 'southern' floating rock in the local vicinity of the 'stairs' formed by floating rocks that connect The Furnace to Fireplume Peak. I think this is simply due to the statistics of small, random sample numbers at work. I suspect that there is an even 50% chance of either Skarr or Karkin spawning each time (like a coin toss), even though our little 'sample' is weighted more towards Skarr. Skarr and Karkin definitely share a spawn timer, such that only one or the other will be 'up' at any given time. ![]() Others have reported a wider range of times, so to be conservative, a 6 +/- 3 hr spawn timer (3-9 hr window) should probably be assumed. Of 11 observed spawns, the earliest that we saw a respawn was at 4.5 hours after the previous tame/kill, the latest was at about 8.0 hours, with the average being close to 6 hours. Spawn Timer: based upon a three-day monitoring campaign, the Gem Beasts appear to be on a 6 +/- 2 hour spawn timer, such that one or the other will spawn 4-8 hours after the last tame/kill. Competition for these beasts was pretty heavy (especially for Skarr), with generally 2-6 hunters present for each spawn (of either faction), yielding me a successful tame of Skarr on Saturday, but a failed attempt of Karkin on Sunday, so I'm still hunting them. We tracked 11 spawns overall (7 of Skarr and 4 of Karkin), between Friday evening and early Tuesday morning, giving us the beginnings of a decent sample size (we missed directly observing ~ 2 spawns). Some hunter friends and I worked on obtaining the Fireland's Gem Beasts (Skarr/Karkin) over the July 4th long weekend, and I thought I would share what we have learned. ![]() The heavy rainfall was the result of Storm Desmond which brought widespread heavy rain and storm force winds to areas of Scotland and northern England. ![]() The wettest day recorded in Britain was the 5th December 2015 when Honister Pass in Cumbria recorded 341.4 mm of rain in a single day (0000-2359). The southwesterly monsoons pile in with moist winds which are caught against the mountains creating huge amounts of rainfall on the village. The reason for its torrential downpours is its proximity to the Bay of Bengal and its situation 1400 m high in the Garo Hills, to the south of the Himalayas. Its difficult to give an exact figure as the height at which raindrops fall and their size vary widely, but given that raindrops fall at an average speed of around 14 mph and assuming a cloud base height of around 2,500 feet, a raindrop would take just over 2 minutes to reach the ground. How long does it take a raindrop to reach the ground? When they first form high up in the atmosphere, they form a spherical shape as the water molecules bind together held by surface tension.Īs they begin to fall their shape changes as they hit other raindrops, while air resistance causes the bottom of the drop to flatten and curve resembling the shape of a jelly bean.ĥ. While raindrops are usually represented in the shape of a teardrop, in reality they are not. This is what is responsible for the familiar smell of rain and is called ' Petrichor'. When raindrops fall on dusty or clay soils, they trap tiny air bubbles on the surface which then shoot upward - as in a glass of Champagne - and burst out of the drop throwing aerosols of scent into the air where they are then distributed by wind. Professor Bocci who conducted the research in the Journal of European Physics did though offer the overall conclusion that "in general, the best thing is to run, as fast as you can - not always, but in general." Recent research has suggested there is no easy answer affected by factors as varied as the individual's height-to-breadth ratio, wind direction and the size of the raindrops. Perhaps you've been caught in the rain and wondered if its better to run as fast as you can to get out of the rain, or whether running into the rain will make you wetter than walking? This creates what is known as Virga clouds, a tail or wisp extending from a cloud in a downwards direction and are generally seen to extend from Cirrocumulus, Altocumulus, Altostratus, Nimbostratus, Stratocumulus, Cumulus or Cumulonimbus clouds. It happens when rain falling from a cloud evaporates or sublimes as it approaches the earth's surface. Under certain conditions, rain can fall from the sky without ever reaching the ground. ![]() About three dozen firefighters from Belton, Grandview and Kansas City responded.įire investigators with the Grandview Fire Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives completed their initial investigation Thursday afternoon and found no indication of criminal activity or foul play, the ATF Kansas City said on Twitter.
